The education system in Trinidad and Tobago needs an overhauling for things to work better and for children to become successful. by overhauling I mean removing the "jokers" in the pack and replacing thwem by those who do share an interest in the welfare of the students and they becoming successful. Our education system is a testing system "every Monday morning is a test" and still we do not assess the students differently. In every workshop you attend they talk about and encourage Multiple Intelligences yet when it is time to assess it is not applied . There is always one way of assessing which is pencil and paper.Don't we have among us students who are bodily kinesthetic etc and should be assessed differently. Who is looking into this? no one yet when the grand master of primary school exams SEA is released you can only hear about those who made it to the top one hundred and placed in the so called prestige schools. They are the ones given all the accolades. Nobody talks about those who couldn't read the questions on the paper and were assessed in the same way as those who could have.
This is such an unfair thing to do to these children. i hope that with the advent of the Reading Specialists employed at the schools throughout the country after training would make a big difference. get real technocrats
Ingrid I have to say that again I enjoyed your post here. I can sum it up by the phrase/s Very True! Very True! and So Very True! Our education system really needs an overhauling for things to work better and for kids to be more successful. I wonder to my self though if the people in charge actually want that. I say this because some of the same problems in education today existed since the Lord Harris report done on our education at the beginning of the 19th century. Also the sons and daughters of the persons who make and shape policies in our country are 'most times' not even educated here. I agree that our system just deals with recall and not all times application there by not encouraging critical thinking. I mean if your subect and verb agreement is off how can you communicate verbally? Thus laws have to be passed that involve me having to pay large fines for driving dangerously in order to avoid endangering my life as well as others. Is this really true??? People in our country choose to do the wrong thing and the law forces them to do the right thing to protect themselves? So why should they fix the system? I'm being too harsh here. I will end on a positive note here. I agree or hope like you do that with the advent of the Reading Specialists employed at the schools throughout the country after training would make a big difference. At least if we can stop people from driving on the shoulder of the roadways we would have done something.....right?
ReplyDeleteShell,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments but do you really think that at the end of this training ninety Reading Specialist there would be a difference, I do not think so. When people are set in their ways it is hard to change . The Administrators in the schools ( principals, HOD etc) are the ones who will monitor this programme.
Remember too, that the political climate in this country would have a great impact on everything done at the time. Are you sure that this programme would be implemented? What about salaries? Where would we be placed? These are factors that must be given consideration.
Are there measures in place to ensure that some of us do not migrate with all the knowledge.
I see some of us doing our private thing and nort work for that Government.
